Tonight in Sydney it's cold, dark, and winter. I'm thinking how much nicer it would be to be here on Naxos. I first went there in 2002. It was different but the same in 2010. Still one of my favourite islands. You must go there. Especially if it means you're escaping a Southern Hemisphere winter.

The 'highway' west of Luxor takes you into the desert, but not a romantic mass of rolling dunes, and fine sandy slopes (not for a while anyway), but a flat, dusty haze of hot dirt. After a many hours and many police checkpoints you reach oases. Water gushes from underground into an otherwise barren landscape providing growth for plantations and date palms. Over centuries villages have established around these springs. One of these oases is called Bahariya. And one of these towns (and there are only a few) is called Bawiti.

There is A LOT of rubbish in Bawiti that really, really needs to be seen to.

So shall we stay in Egypt for a while? Perhaps it would be nice to see the Nile ...
The Nile Egypt June 2010
and some of the people who live along it
you can't tell from the pictures, because they look quite cool and calm, but it's hot. Super hot. The kind of hot that sits on your skin like fabric. Hot so still and heavy it becomes almost tactile. And all you can do is wait. Wait the for the afternoon to fade into evening when it cools enough for life to begin again.
